By Gareth Vipers and Joe Flint Hoda Kotb will be stepping down as co-host of NBC's flagship "Today" show, after 26 years at the network. The journalist, who turned 60 last month, made the announcement live on-air Thursday. "It was such a monumental year for me when I turned 60 because I started thinking about that decade, like what does that decade mean, what does it hold, what's it going to have for me," Kotb said, holding back tears. "I realized it was time for me to turn the page at 60, to try something new," she said. In a letter to colleagues, Kotb said she would be working on the show through the beginning of 2025. Kotb joined as co-anchor of the two-hour "Today" flagship with Savannah Guthrie in 2018 after longtime anchor Matt Lauer was fired amid allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct. She was credited with stabilizing the show and getting past the trauma surrounding the departure of Lauer. "Today" has long been a profit engine for NBC's news division and a key promotional platform for other NBCUniversal content. Although "Today" hasn't been immune to the ratings declines that broadcast news programs have endured over the past several years, it remains an important revenue source for NBCUniversal, a unit of cable and entertainment company Comcast. Kotb also co-anchors the fourth hour of "Today" with Jenna Bush Hager. A replacement for Kotb hasn't been named for either of the "Today" shows she appears on. Kotb appeared regularly on the show before she became co-anchor, but her move proved popular with viewers and "Today" became the only morning show at the time to feature two female anchors. Kotb explained her decision in a memo to NBC staff Thursday. "As I write this, my heart is all over the map, I know I'm making the right decision, " she wrote. After graduating Virginia Tech, Oklahoma native Kotb spent six years at WWL-TV in New Orleans before joining NBC News in 1998 as a correspondent for its newsmagazine show, "Dateline." The original version incorrectly said she co-anchors the third hour of "Today." (END) Dow Jones Newswires September 26, 2024 10:07 ET (14:07 GMT)
