1036 ET - Costco Wholesale's recent membership fee increase didn't appear to garner much of a reaction from members, JPMorgan analysts say in a research note. The warehouse club chain raised fees in the U.S. and Canada by $5 for Gold Star members and $10 for Executive members on Sept. 1, the first hike in seven years that broke from the company's typical 5-year price increase cadence as management waited for the impact of the pandemic to slow, according to the note. Management says it hasn't seen a notable reaction to the latest increase, as 4Q renewal rates were relatively unchanged, besides just some lapping of a 2023 discounted membership promotion, the analysts say. 1033 ET - Long-term holders of Costco Wholesale stock should take advantage of any profit-taking by other investors this morning, as the wholesale club's shares typically struggle around quarterly prints despite the fact that earnings topped Wall Street expectations in fiscal 4Q, Oppenheimer analysts Rupesh Parikh and Erica Eiler say in a research note. In a mixed backdrop for discretionary spending, Costco continues to deliver steady share gains globally and is expected to keep up that momentum for the balance of the year with superior merchandising efforts and its unique value proposition, the analysts say. 1032 ET - Costco Wholesale's value proposition continues to resonate with customers, as evidenced by its 6.9% comparable sales growth and 7% gain in membership during fiscal 4Q, Stifel analysts Mark Astrachan and Christopher Bond say in a research note. Executive memberships outpaced normal membership growth, and renewal rates were flat worldwide while decreasing just 10 basis points in the U.S. and Canada, the analysts say. The warehouse club chain's recent membership fee will likely be reinvested to boost sales and traffic growth over the next 12 to 18 months, the analysts say. (dean.seal@wsj.com)

1027 ET - Costco Wholesale's sales remain strong, it sees industry-leading growth in the discretionary category and its margins continue to tick higher, but Truist analysts say they're keeping a hold rating on the stock as its current valuation has become extremely stretched, even for Costco. Recent operational changes, like scanning membership cards on entry and packaging changes, could turn out to be negatives at the margin "for a stock that has virtually no room for error," the analysts say in a research note. These are not game changers, but could start to add some friction to sales," they say. Shares slide 1.7% to $885.94. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
