  By Denny Jacob Bumble plans to acquire group and community app Geneva, part of the company's ambitions to further expand its relationship offerings beyond dating. The online dating app company said it plans to expand Bumble For Friends, its friendship offering, from one-to-one connections to groups and communities to serve the various ways people seek friendships with the Geneva acquisition. Chief Executive Lidiane Jones, who took over at the beginning of the year, said in February the company was rethinking the way its standalone friendship-focused app should function. "When there is a one-to-one match for friendships, you're really limiting the set of users that are comfortable with that paradigm," the CEO said. "And what we want to do is actually shift that paradigm and make Bumble For Friends a lot more about building and finding communities." Executive Chair Whitney Wolfe Herd, who stepped down as CEO of the company she founded, at a conference held by Bloomberg recently emphasized this point. "We will not be a dating app in a few years. Dating will be a component, but we will be a true human connection platform," Wolfe Herd said. Bumble's planned acquisition builds on other offerings in its portfolio including Badoo and Fruitz for dating, Official for those in committed relationships and Bumble Bizz for professional networking. It also comes as the Bumble dating app has been recently refreshed, with the most notable change being a new feature that allows women to set a question that matches can respond to as users sought more ways to start a conversation. Bumble has historically operated under the premise of women initiating conversations to give them more control of their interactions.
