0736 GMT - Volkswagen's partnership with Rivian is welcomed, given the already proven expertise of the U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer, Bernstein analysts say in a research note. The German automaker's investment, which dwarfs its $700 million investment in Xpeng, may "make it less likely that we see a re-run of the $2.6 billion loss that Volkswagen suffered from its ill-fated investment in Argo AI," the analysts say. However, what remains unanswered is the impact on the company's massive capital expenditure and research and experimental development program which, according to Bernstein, remains stubbornly high in absolute euro terms, the analysts say. On top of that, CEO Oliver Blume admitted that the products of the joint venture won't be seen until the second half of this decade. Shares trade 0.5% lower at EUR106.00. (nina.kienle@wsj.com)

0603 GMT - Rivian Automotive has a vote of confidence thanks to a partnership with Germany's Volkswagen that should boost its shares, but questions remain about the profitability prospects of the U.S. electric-pickup maker as a standalone company, RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan says in a note. Under the deal, Volkswagen is investing $1 billion in Rivian, with plans to spend up to $5 billion as part of a software-development partnership. Investors have doubts about the competitiveness of Rivian's products in light of the current EV slowdown and increasing competition from traditional carmakers, the analyst says. "We don't think this deal necessarily solves that. It does beg the question of whether Rivian could become a supplier in the event its vehicle strategy does not pan out," Narayan says. 0514 GMT - A partnership between Volkswagen and Rivian Automotive solves problems for both companies, giving much-needed liquidity to the U.S. electric-vehicle company and offering some help to the German giant with its software challenges, RBC Capital Markets analyst Tom Narayan says in a note. "Rivian gets liquidity that it needs to fund its future growth and VW gets its [software-defined vehicle] architecture solved quicker and cheaper than it would have if it were doing it on its own," Narayan says. Volkswagen is investing $1 billion in Rivian, with plans to spend up to $5 billion as part of a software-development partnership. The deal also provides a valuation floor for Rivian and gives Volkswagen exposure to the U.S. sport-utility-vehicle and pickup market through its Rivian stake, the analyst says.
