1035 GMT - European telecommunications operators are optimistic that generative artificial intelligence tools can help them lower costs, but are more cautious about revenue opportunities, Berenberg analysts Usman Ghazi and Carl Murdock-Smith say in a research note. A Deutsche Telekom presentation at industry event Mobile World Congress last month flagged potential cost savings AI can deliver through reduced energy consumption, customer service management and more intuitive mobile devices, Berenberg says. However, telecom operators are more skeptical that AI applications might result in medium-term revenue opportunities, Berenberg says. "Announced investments this quarter by Iliad, Swisscom and Telenor in Nvidia's graphic processing units--GPUs--were only in the range of tens of millions of euros, whereas Orange and BT are biding their time for lower-cost alternatives," the analysts say. 1022 GMT - European telecommunications companies' earnings showed mixed momentum during the latest reporting season, Berenberg analysts Usman Ghazi and Carl Murdock-Smith say in a research note. "Despite improving revenue trends and energy costs past their peak in 2023, a broadening of inflation headwinds in areas other than wages meant most operators guided to Ebitda growth in line with service revenue growth," the analysts say. The sector's mixed earnings trends partly explain why telecom stocks have traded sideways over the past four months after outperforming the broader market for most of 2023, though investors' shift toward cyclical sectors didn't help either, they say. The Stoxx Europe 600 Telecoms index is up 0.6% since the beginning of 2024. (adria.calatayud@wsj.com)
