1025 ET - Peak production and shipment of toys wrapped up at the end of August and in the first half of September, UBS analysts say in a research note. More than 85% of shipments for Mattel and Hasbro into the U.S. is coming through the port in Long Beach, Calif., with most of freight contracted for both companies in the first half of the year, the analysts say. That means 85% to 90% of freight is locked in for the year, limiting the toy makers' exposure to spot rate volatility tied to labor disruption on East Coast ports, the analysts say. They expect spot rate volatility to drive contract rates higher from here out. (dean.seal@wsj.com)

0932 ET - A potential strike at the U.S. East Coast seaports is pushing toy makers and retailers to shuffle supply chains, UBS economists say in a report. "We recently talked to the management of a global transportation company and their view is that port strikes at this point are very likely," UBS says. If the strike is confirmed, rates are likely to rise, especially for congested ports like LA/Long Beach Port, according to the analysts. The potential impact could hurt some companies more than others. UBS notes that Mattel "has a more superior supply chain in the industry, able to more nimbly navigate unexpected events."
