0949 ET - Abercrombie & Fitch isn't sweating potential steep tariffs on Chinese imports under the Trump administration. COO Scott Lipesky says on a call with analysts that the company imports about 5% to 6% of its receipts from China into the U.S. The retailer has worked since the first Trump presidency to pare down its imports from China. In 2019, the company imported about one quarter of its merchandise from China. Lipesky also notes that the company's exposure to Mexico and Canada is minor. (ben.glickman@wsj.com; @benglickman)

0947 ET - Strong performance during the back-to-school shopping season quelled some caution from Abercrombie & Fitch management. After some relatively cautious comments last quarter, management sounds more optimistic after 3Q results. CEO Fran Horowitz say on a call with analysts that strong back-to-school results were across genders and driven by categories like sweaters and fleece. Management says those results, as well as sales during the fall selling season as weather cooled off, have inspired confidence. "We are more bullish today than three months ago," says COO Scott Lipesky.(ben.glickman@wsj.com; @benglickman)

0945 ET - Abercrombie & Fitch was willing to pay up to prevent empty shelves in the holiday season. COO Scott Lipesky says on a call with analysts that the company incurred higher freight costs in 3Q because the company ramped up its use of air shipments. That was meant to avoid possible shipping delays related to inconsistent ocean transit times and the East Coast port strike. Inventory at the end of the period was up 16% from a year earlier, but the company says it is ready to meet holiday demand."Many retailers leaned into air freight in post-pandemic years as supply chain snags led to slower shipping times in some cases."(ben.glickman@wsj.com; @benglickman)
