By Al Root Boeing will have another go next week at the first crewed launch of its Starliner -- the commercial aerospace giant's reusable spaceship designed to take astronauts to and from the International Space Station. The United Launch Alliance, or ULA, a 50/50 joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, said on Tuesday evening that the updated launch date would be Friday, May 17, around 6:16 p.m. ET. The CST-100 Starliner launch was originally scheduled for this past Monday, but was scrubbed because of an "oxygen relief valve on the Centaur Stage on the Atlas V." Atlas V is the ULA rocket that will eventually carry Starliner into orbit. The Centaur is the upper stage of the rocket, and the lower stage is a rocket booster. Starliner is one of two spaceships NASA is using for crew transport. The other is the SpaceX Dragon capsule, which started transporting astronauts in 2020. NASA chose both SpaceX and Boeing in 2014, but it's taken a little longer for Boeing to ready Starliner. A successful launch of Starliner's first crewed mission would be a welcome positive moment for Boeing, particularly after the spacecraft's many delays and the dive in the company's shares. So far this year, Boeing stock has tumbled more than 30%. Most of the decline came after the Jan. 5 emergency-door-plug blowout on a 737 MAX 9 jet operated by Alaska Air Group. The incident has led to questions about Boeing's manufacturing quality, and more oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration. Monday's scrubbed launch process can be re-watched here on NASA TV. The link can be accessed from the ULA or Boeing websites. An earlier version of this article incorrectly said the date was this week. (END) Dow Jones Newswires May 08, 2024 15:40 ET (19:40 GMT)
