A British regulatory agency said on Wednesday that it was looking into Hewlett Packard Enterprise's acquisition of Juniper Networks.

The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority said Wednesday it opened an inquiry to review whether the merger would hurt competition, and it will solicit comments from the public until July 3. The CMA's initial decision will come by August 14.

By David Sachs The U.K.'s top antitrust watchdog will assess whether a merger between Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Juniper Networks undercuts competition. The Competition and Markets Authority will probe the potential merger, in which the Texas-based IT firm, known as HPE, aims to buy California-based artificial intelligence and networking company Juniper in a deal that was valued at $14 billion in January. The CMA set a deadline of Aug. 14 to complete the initial review into the deal. In January, HPE said the acquisition aims to double its networking business and enhance its edge-to-cloud strategy. The newly formed networking segment is expected to grow to about 31% of revenue post merger, from 18% in 2023, it said. Based in Sunnyvale, California, Juniper supplies communication network services and equipment, such as routers and switches, to clients in technology, telecommunications, finance, and other industries. HPE provides cloud services to small businesses, large corporations, and governments, originating from the famous tech company Hewlett-Packard, founded in 1939 by William Hewlett and David Packard. In 2015, HPE separated from the computer and printer division, now called HP. Juniper is also expanding its artificial intelligence division, Mist AI, which uses AI and machine learning to improve wireless access. The company acquired Mist Systems, as it was formerly known, for approximately $400 million in 2019.
