06:15 ET -Should President-elect Donald Trump implement tariffs proposed in his election campaign, they could increase inflation and cost each U.S. American consumer up to $2,400 annually, ING's James Knightley says in a note. Overnight, Trump posted on Truth Social that on day one of his presidency he would impose 20% import tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% from China. Writing ahead of Trump's latest post, Knightley says the increase in the cost of goods, coupled with labor constraints from proposed immigration policies, could lead to a one percentage point increase in inflation. Tariffs can generate significant revenue. However, broader economic impacts and resulting shifts in consumer behavior limit their effectiveness as a long-term fiscal strategy, he adds. 1220 ET -- Abercrombie & Fitch's latest earnings were again a bright spot, but there were some signs of fatigue there, too, William Blair analysts Dylan Carden and Anna Linscott say in a research note. "We see the largest near-term risks to margin being higher freight rates and normalizing inventory levels," the analysts say. Overall, Wall Street is going to have to decide in the coming quarters if it is fine with outsized comparatives at Hollister, which is newer on its journey, as the A&F brand decelerates further against challenging stacked comparisons, the analysts add. Shares fall 4% to $148.35. (sabela.ojea@wsj.com; @sabelaojeaguix)

Abercrombie & Fitch topped third-quarter earnings estimates, raised guidance for the full year, and appointed a new chief financial officer. But the stock fell Tuesday because expectations were simply too high heading into the report.

0949 ET - Abercrombie & Fitch isn't sweating potential steep tariffs on Chinese imports under the Trump administration. COO Scott Lipesky says on a call with analysts that the company imports about 5% to 6% of its receipts from China into the U.S. The retailer has worked since the first Trump presidency to pare down its imports from China. In 2019, the company imported about one quarter of its merchandise from China. Lipesky also notes that the company's exposure to Mexico and Canada is minor. (ben.glickman@wsj.com; @benglickman)
