1315 ET - Devon Energy is buying Grayson Mill Energy in a $5 billion cash-and-stock deal despite having a substantial runway of remaining drilling opportunities, indicating that it may have felt some pressure to strike a deal to keep pace with its peers amid a frenzy of consolidation and M&A in the oil-and-gas sector, Enverus analyst Andrew Dittmar says in a research note. The Grayson acquisition continues a trend of buyers looking beyond the popular Permian Basin to find assets with scale in an increasingly consolidated market, the analyst says. The deal makes the Williston Basin a key operating region for Devon, which otherwise may have been a seller if it couldn't find some other scalable buying opportunity to expand its footprint, Dittmar says. 1258 ET - Acquiring Grayson Mill Energy for $5 billion makes Devon Energy the fourth largest producer in the Williston Basin based on gross operated production, a vault forward from its previous ranking as the 10th largest in the basin that includes parts of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Canada, Enverus analyst Andrew Dittmar says in a research note. The ranking accounts for ConocoPhillips' recent acquisition of Marathon Oil, which is expected to form the third biggest Williston producer behind Chord Energy and Continental, the analyst says. Grayson actually would have been a natural acquisition target for Chord, which may now find itself as an acquisition target as M&A in energy production heats up, though it could also go after smaller opportunities in the Williston itself, Dittmar says.
