1224 ET - Federal prosecutors and environmental regulators have reached a settlement valued at over $310 million with Norfolk Southern over the Feb 2023 train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, which the railroad operator has already factored in its $1.7 billion accrued expenses related to the derailment through Mar 31 and in its 2024 financial outlook. The Justice Department and EPA had jointly filed a civil complaint against Norfolk, alleging that the discharge of pollutants and hazardous substances from the derailment violated the Clean Water Act. The agreement includes the cost of past and future cleanup, a 20-year community health program that includes medical monitoring for individuals within proximity to the derailment site, long-term groundwater and surface water monitoring.
